"Tune Ups: Miami Nice,"
Guitar World, June 1993

Yngwie Malmsteen has much to be thankful for, and he knows it. At a recent party held at his palatial Florida home, the Swedish-born wonder reflected, "Ten years ago today I got off the plane in Los Angeles with only my guitar and an extra pair of jeans. Now, look at this--I'm living in paradise."

It is mildly ironic that Yngwie's American Dream was largely paid for by his success outside the U.S. For it is his popularity in Japan and Europe, more than anything else, that has made it possible for him to live in Miami splendor--worlds away from the seedy, cockroach-infested L.A. apartment he shared with the members of Steeler, his first American band, a decade ago.

Yngwie says his next effort, tentatively titled Eye of the Storm [later retitled The Seventh Sign]. will explore new facets of his style. Scheduled for release sometime this year, the album "will be more powerful than Hurricane Andrew," boasts the guitarist. "But it will also show my diversity as a composer. I already wrote a funky reggae-type piece, a thrash tune, love songs, as well as some strictly classical instrumentals."

Despite his love for Miami, Yngwie looks forward to getting back on the road. "I can't wait to finish the album so I can get back on stage," he says. "Touring keeps me from taking my paradise here for granted."
