Seventh Sign Reviews

"The number one guitar hero is back with the excellent new album! ...back for the attack!" Highest ratings ever, 93, 94, and 96 --BURRN!,Japan

"Malmsteen has channeled all the mishaps into creative momentum and conjured up the gutsiest platter of his guitar-grappling career... Simply, this is pure poetry in motion from Yng the axe-twiddling king. All hail!" 4 1/2 stars, --Mark "Barmy" Greenway, RAW, England

There's so much feeling and passion in the new album; when Mike sings I actually feel that he means it! After hearing "Meant to Be" and "Sorrow," how people can say Yngwie doesn't play with emotion is beyond me. "Pyramid of Cheops" is way scary, and as to "Angel in Heat," y'know, if it was a movie you'd have never got it past the censors!! Congratulations on a job well done. --Mark O., Suffolk, England

"Returning to radio this week after a long absence is legendary fretboard wizard Yngwie Malmsteen... An excellent comeback effort for Yngwie and band. Beware--the guitar god cometh again." --Album Network, 4/8/94, USA

I recently received the import edition of "The Seventh Sign." I would like to state that I am not worthy, because the new album kicks ass. It is very raw and intense, and as always Yngwie's solos are mind-boggling. The bonus track "Angel in Heat" is wild, to say the least. Please tell Yngwie his biggest fan in Hawaii loves his new album. There has never been a doubt in my mind who is Number One. --LCPL Jorge C., US Marine Corp, Hawaii, USA

"Beware of the Seventh Sign, Malmsteen returns with anger and power!" --Young Guitar, Japan

Do whatever possible to buy this album--it's well worth it. It reminds me of elements from "Trilogy" and "Fire & Ice," but very unique unto itself. I particularly enjoyed "Pyramid of Cheops" and "Crash and Burn.&quot. I wish Yngwie much success both personally and professionally. "The Seventh Sign" is a tremendous album. --Lori L., Springfield, MA, USA

"The Swede returns with an album you can't afford to miss!! Yngwie is back! The exciting opener "Never Die" is breakneck and relentless, bearing Yngwie's trademark scalar wizardry... there are enough earth-stopping riffs and mind-boggling guitar pyrotechnics to satisfy even the most militant Metalhead." 4 stars, --Cliff Douse, Guitar Techniques, England

The first song on the new album, "Never Die," is how Yngwie should sound. Also, "Crash and Burn" is a fast classical influenced piece with a really good melody. I'd like Yngwie to concentrate more on the classical side of his songwriting, with more instrumentals. I miss the wonderful keyboard solos from albums like "Trilogy" and "Odyssey". Mike Vescera is a real good singer, but give Mats Olausson more space. --Kjell A., Nynashamn, Sweden

"Yngwie Malmsteen's music requires no description. Everyone recognizes him as technical guitarist extraordinaire. And so he was on this evening [at L.A.'s Troubadour]... While Yngwie is the unquestioned star of the show, he has surrounded himself with equally technical and very capable players... no one can deny that he is the very, very best in his style of music. And sometimes it's better to be timeless than timely. I suggest you pick up Yngwie's excellent new album; his intensity still rocks the world." --Savannah, Rock City News, USA

Classical artists like Bach, Vivaldi, and violinist Nicolo Paganini have inspired Malmsteen's dazzling fine-tuned style. Malmsteen, who has set amazing standards of excellence in both guitar playing and musical composition, describes The Seventh Sign as being his strongest musical effort to date. This album explores quite an array of musical influences. Using combinations of hard rock sound with poetic melodies, it easily expresses the distinctive virtuoso playing of Malmsteen together with a new line-up, which features vocalist Mike Vescera. The title track "The Seventh Sign" depicts funky inspirations from Malmsteen's all time idol Jimi Hendrix, whose musical mastery solidified his obsessive dedication to his instrument. An elaborate fullness of sound was recorded by veteran engineer Jeff Glixman and Jim Thomas at New River Studios, mixed by Mike Fraser (previously known for work including Metallica, David Coverdale, Jimmy Page, and Aerosmith). Those who love to appreciate well-structured musical composition, beautiful ballads, lengthy lead breaks, and some hard 'n' heavy mainstream metal will enjoy The Seventh Sign, Malmsteen's ninth solo album. --Hedrush, On the Street, Australia
